Following the brutality by a police officer in Tripura a delegation from the Human Rights Commission visited the victim at the hospital where he is undergoing treatment for severe injuries inflicted by a sub-divisional police officer during an interrogation. The visit by the Human Rights team has brought to light the egregious violation of human rights by the police officer sparking outrage and calls for a thorough investigation into the incident.

On July 10, the Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) of Ambassa Sub-division Nirupam Datta summoned Sujit Dey who is a resident of East Ganki village under Khowai Police Station to his office in Ambassa for questioning. The interrogation was reportedly in connection with Dey’s nephew Raju Ghosh (28) who had eloped with a girl five months ago.

According to the sources, what began as questioning quickly escalated into violence as the police officer Datta allegedly subjecting Dey to a brutal beating. The incident left Dey with visible injuries across his body necessitating immediate medical treatment.

Following the assault Dey was first admitted to Dhalai District Hospital in Kulai in critical condition. After spending a night there he was transferred to Khowai District Hospital on July 11 where he is currently undergoing treatment.

The incident has drawn sharp criticism from human rights activists. On July 12, a delegation from the Human Rights Commission visited Dey in the hospital. The team led by the Khowai District Secretary of the Human Rights Commission Asish Mukherjee strongly condemned the alleged police brutality.

“This is a clear violation of the directives set by our country’s highest court. A police officer committing such a heinous act, especially within his own office, is not only illegal but also a gross abuse of power.” Mukherjee said.

It was learned that Dey who is a betel leaf trader by profession is currently unable to speak properly due to his injuries. His family has expressed their intention to file a formal complaint against SDPO Datta.
