Tripura: Under Construction RCC Footbridge Collapses Before Completion
An under construction RCC footbridge located over the Gomati River at Mohanbhog Rural Development Block in the Sepahijala district of Tripura suffered a major setback before its completion. The bridge connecting Shital Nama’s house to Beniachara Gram Panchayat has developed a crack due to the collapse of one of its pillars.
It was learned that heavy rainfall over the past two days caused the Gomati River to swell leading to the erosion of the soil beneath one of the three RCC pillars. As a result the pillar sank deep into the ground causing a fracture in the bridge. Upon noticing the damage this morning the villagers expressed their outrage.
Locals allege that the bridge was constructed using substandard materials and poor workmanship. They claim that the amount of cement used was inadequate the reinforcing rods were too thin and the concrete was poured while the area was still flooded.
Despite repeated complaints to the Panchayat Pradhan and Ward Members, no action was taken to rectify the situation. The contractor who oversaw the pouring of concrete for the damaged pillar did not consult any engineer that leads to the subpar quality of the work.
Villagers identified Shyamal Pal and Ripan Saha hailing from Melaghar as the individuals responsible for the construction of this faulty bridge. The entire project costing Rs 1,30,43,380, is alleged to have been executed in a corrupt manner. The work was undertaken by the Rural Development department and villagers expressed they have been saved from a major disaster.
Residents of Beniachara Gram Panchayat are now demanding the complete demolition of the bridge and its reconstruction. They have threatened to disrupt any further construction activities if their demands are not met. Locals accuse both contractors and political leaders of embezzling funds meant for the bridge leading to this substandard construction.
