A delegation from the Indian National Congress at the North Tripura District committee in Tripura today submitted a memorandum to the Superintendent of Police of North Tripura district Bhanupada Chakraborty seeking security against obstruction of opposition party members’ electoral work and to ensure proper conduct of the upcoming three-tier panchayat elections in the state.

In this delegation were North Tripura District’s Congress Secretary Joan Bhattacharjee, Joint Secretary Indrajit Pal, Advocate Bachit Khan and other Congress leaders were present.

While speaking with the media persons they claimed that the environment surrounding the three-tier panchayat elections in the state is not normal. In this terrifying situation the party workers are not able to exercise their democratic rights. They are sometimes threatened, their property vandalised, and at times they face physical assault. Despite filing several cases at Dharmanagar Police Station in protest the police have not taken appropriate action.

“The current situation is untenable for free and fair elections,” Bhattacharjee stated after submitting the memorandum. He cited recent incidents, including threats to Congress leader Gouri Biswas on June 29 and the vandalism of her house on July 12.

They also emphasised that to preserve the democratic process it is necessary to provide government security to each candidate for 24 hours until the panchayat election ends.

They shed light on a few incidents that happened a few days before, on July 12 Congress leader Gouri Biswas’s house was vandalised and on July 15 in the afternoon the Pradesh Congress Secretary Chayan Bhattacharjee was intercepted on the road and threatened to ensure that the Congress party remains inactive in the upcoming panchayat elections.

As far as the current situation is concerned the Congress with these demands met with North Tripura District Superintendent of Police Bhanupada Chakraborty and submitted their representation. The delegation in front of journalists condemned the ruling party’s activities ahead of the three-tier panchayat elections, appealed for justice and requested that democratic rights be preserved in this election.
