In a moment of bravery that will be remembered for a long time four young girls averted a massive rail accident on August 10 afternoon, saving thousands of lives and earning themselves the title of heroes.
The incident took place near the 125 bridge located over the Jamjuri River on the Dharmnagar-Panisagar railway line where the girls stumbled upon a gaping crack in the track’s joint.
Supriti who first noticed the crack said, “We were walking along the track when I saw a big gap in the joint. I immediately told my friends Momi, Shona, and Bobita and after noticing the crack we rushed to the nearby railway crossing gate but no one was there.”
The girls then returned to the spot and started shouting for help which attracted the attention of local residents. “We were scared but we knew we had to act fast and we took photos and videos of the crack and sent them to the railway authorities’ helpline number.” said Momi.
The authorities immediately stopped the scheduled rail for a while and sent a team to repair the track. “We received the alert around 4 PM and immediately took action, we are grateful to the girls for their quick thinking which saved hundreds of lives.” said a railway official.
The local residents have hailed the girls as heroes and demanded that the railway authorities reward and encourage them for their bravery.
“These girls have shown exemplary courage and patriotism, they deserve to be rewarded and encouraged to inspire others.” said a local resident.
The girls’ act has also raised concerns about the safety of the railway tracks in the region. “This incident highlights the need for regular maintenance and inspection of the tracks and we demand that the authorities take immediate action to ensure the safety of passengers.” said another resident.
