Tripura: BJP Goons Allegedly Attack CPI(M) Candidate at Sonamura Before Three-tier Panchayat Poll Counting
Goons allegedly backed by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party assaulted Left Front candidate Litan Miah at Srimantapur Gram Panchayat under Kathalia Block in Sonamura Sub-division of Tripura on August 9.
According to eyewitnesses, Miah was returning home after offering namaz at the local mosque when a group of miscreants attacked him and his brother at the mosque gate. The attackers allegedly armed with pistols and sharp weapons left Miah and his family members injured before fleeing from the scene.
As soon as his family members noticed Miah they immediately reached there to save Miah and his brother, but goons attacked them as well. Later, when the locals arrived at the scene the miscreants ran away from there and locals promptly brought the injured to Sonamura Sub-divisional Hospital for treatment.
Meanwhile, a case has been filed against seven persons including BJP candidate Maman Maisan and Booth President Sadek Maisan, July Maisan, BJP Candidate Firoz Maisan, Delowar Hossain, Khalil Miah and Manjjil Hoque at the Sonamura Police Station.
Following the attack, while addressing a press conference today at the CPI(M)’s Sub-divisional office CPI(M) nominated candidate Litan Miah alleged that the attackers were backed by the Bharatiya Janata Party and demanded action against them. He also claimed that the attackers were armed with pistols and sharp weapons.
While addressing the media, the CPI(M) MLA Shyamal Chakraborty condemned the incident and questioned the fairness of the election process. “Despite the Election Commission’s claims of a peaceful election, such incidents raise doubts about the integrity of the process,” he said.
Chakraborty demanded that the Election Commission ensure a peaceful counting process and provide security to opposition candidates and their agents.
The incident has sparked tension in the area as locals are demanding action against the accused. The police administration has faced criticism for not taking action against the accused despite complaints being filed.
