The Tripura High Court has set a strict eight-week deadline for the state government to pay the outstanding dues to jute mill employees. This move comes after the government failed to meet the earlier deadline, prompting the court to take a stern stance.
According to lawyer Purushottam Roy Barman, “The Jute Mill employees and the state government have confirmed that 191 employees have been financially compensated in accordance with the High Court’s verdict. Jute Mill has already disbursed Rs 30 crore for this purpose.” However, he noted that an additional 227 employees are still awaiting their dues, which will require an estimated Rs 35 crore.
The authorities have applied to the bank for the necessary funds and are also exploring options to sell off land owned by the Jute Mill to settle the dues. Despite these efforts, the state government and Jute Mill authorities had sought an eight-month extension, which was rejected by the High Court.
This ruling underscores the court’s commitment to ensuring timely justice for the jute mill employees, who have been waiting for their dues for a long time. The state government and Jute Mill authorities must now work within the stipulated timeframe to avoid further action from the court.
