Unemployed youths staged a demonstration near Swami Vivekananda Maidan here in the capital of Tripura state Agartala on Thursday, protesting against an alleged scam involving fake certificates used to secure government jobs in Tripura.
The protesters claim that young people from other states particularly Uttar Pradesh and Bihar are obtaining fraudulent Permanent Resident of Tripura Certificates (PRTC) for sums ranging from Rs 100,000 to Rs 200,000. They allege that these certificates are then used to compete for jobs reserved for Tripura residents.
“Every year, outsiders are taking advantage of our quota and leaving local youths jobless and this year, they’re targeting the SSC-GD exam. We demand immediate action from the government.” said Rajesh Deb, one of the protest organizers.
The demonstrators warned of larger protests if the authorities fail to address the issue promptly. As soon as the East Agartala Police Station officials learned about the protest they promptly arrived at the scene and assured the protesters that their concerns would be investigated, leading to a temporary suspension of the agitation.
Sources close to the matter mentioned that the scam may have broader implications, with allegations that even Bangladeshi nationals are illegally entering India to obtain such certificates through a network of brokers.
“These brokers must have connections within the Sub-divisional Magistrate’s office, a thorough investigation is needed to expose the entire network.” said Pranab Sarkar, a local activist.
The incident has raised concerns about the integrity of the recruitment process in Tripura and the potential involvement of government officials in the alleged scam.
