Tripura State Police Constable Santosh Shil, currently employed at the Damcherra Police Station in North Tripura District, was arrested on Thursday night on charges of involvement in drug trafficking. This arrest comes as part of a larger crackdown on corruption within the state’s commitment to combating the drug trade.

The investigation leading to Shil’s arrest began several days ago when Tripura Police seized a Mahindra Thar and a large quantity of Yaba Tablets near Gita Bhavan located at the Nayapara area in Dharmanagar. After the initial investigation it was revealed that the vehicle was registered under the name of Jhuma Biswas and identified as Shil’s wife raising immediate suspicions about the constable’s involvement.

Following the seizure, the North Tripura District Superintendent of Police Bhanupada Chakraborty had previously hinted at a breakthrough in the case, and confirmed the arrest. “We have a zero-tolerance policy towards corruption within our ranks, especially when it comes to drug-related offences,” Chakraborty stated in a press conference.

Meanwhile, Constable Shil has been temporarily suspended from service. The police department is conducting a thorough investigation into his assets including multiple Mahindra Thar allegedly in his possession which are inconsistent with the income of a police constable.

This case is being seen as a significant step in the state government’s efforts to create a “Drug-free Tripura” and uphold its commitment to “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas”. The arrest sends a strong message that no one is above the law, regardless of their position.

As the investigation continues, authorities have promised further action against any other law enforcement personnel found to be involved in illegal activities.
