The Dharmanagar Sub-Divisional Magistrate’s (SDM) office is facing serious allegations of widespread corruption as reports claim officials are prioritising bills only if bribes are offered.

Sources allege that bills submitted for government grants and other purposes are cleared swiftly for those who are willing to “pay extra” or offer “commission” to the Accounts Officer Pranabesh Dhar. Conversely, those who refuse to participate in this corrupt practice are forced to endure bureaucratic hurdles and delays with their bills languishing for indefinite periods.

The accusations extend beyond Mr. Dhar, raising concerns about the complicity of the Sub-divisional Magistrate himself Shyamajoy Jamatia. Critics point to a culture of silence within the office indicating Jamatia is turning a blind eye to the alleged irregularities.

Adding fuel to the fire are suspicions of inflated bills submitted for the recent Lok Sabha elections. A staggering Rs 33,33,600 has reportedly been sent to the State Election Commission, with claims of significant discrepancies within the bill itself. Furthermore, allegations have surfaced regarding unequal distribution of payments among officials involved in the election process. While some received Rs 3,000, others performing similar duties were allegedly paid only Rs 2,000.

Further irregularities have been unearthed in the processing of bills for vehicles used for elections and other official purposes. Bills for 2021 and 2022 remain uncleared, while those for 2023 and 2024 are being expedited – allegedly only after the payment of additional, unofficial fees.

Dhar’s past has also come under scrutiny. Having served in the Dharmanagar office since 2012, he is said to have enjoyed strong ties with the Left parties before the 2018 political shift in the state. Despite the change in power, he reportedly managed to retain his position through influential connections and is now accused of exploiting his role to indulge in corrupt practices.

The alleged culture of corruption within the Dharmanagar SDM’s Office has sparked public outrage. Residents are demanding a swift and thorough investigation into the accusations as strict punitive measures taken against those found guilty.
