The Sadar Sub-divisional District Magistrate along with the Food Safety Department and other officials conducted a surprise inspection of restaurants, hotels and sweet shops here in the state capital Agartala today. The operation prompted by several public complaints which revealed serious hygiene issues that put customer health at risk.
The officials and inspectors found several concerning practices including restaurants using outdated and potentially dangerous equipment to prepare food. They also identified establishments serving reheated leftovers that were days old.
The raid targeted various establishments including the Abhishek Restaurant and many others which attracting particular attention. Here, inspectors noticed food being prepared in unsanitary conditions with old and potentially hazardous equipment. The team collected food samples for further testing and subsequently shut down the Abhishek restaurant’s kitchen.
While speaking with the media persons of the officials from Sub-divisional administration said, “These practices are not just unhygienic, they pose a significant health risk to our citizens and we will take strict action against offending restaurants once the lab results are in.”
Further inspections at restaurants at the Kaman Chowmuhani area unearthed another disturbing picture of the current situation of the restaurants and hotels. Leftovers including biryani, cooked meat, and chowmein, from the previous two days were found stored in deep freezer boxes. This raises serious concerns about the potential for foodborne illnesses among customers.
The raid highlights a disturbing pattern – many restaurants in Agartala prioritize profit over public health. Not only are they serving potentially hazardous food, but the prices are reportedly exorbitant, placing them beyond the reach of many residents.
“We had no idea our favorite restaurants were cutting corners like this, I hope this leads to better food safety standards across the city.” said Priya Das a regular diner at Abhishek Restaurant.
The administration’s actions have drawn attention to the need for stricter regulations and regular inspections. Critics argue that sporadic raids triggered by complaints are insufficient and call for a more proactive approach to ensure food safety standards are consistently met.
The exorbitant pricing in these restaurants has also come under scrutiny. Authorities are urged to address this issue ensuring that residents aren’t burdened by inflated costs for food of questionable quality.
The raid’s outcome serves as a stark warning to restaurant owners in Agartala. Consumers deserve a safe and healthy dining experience, and the administration must take decisive steps to ensure restaurants prioritize hygiene and fair pricing.
