Tripura’s Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury has expressed deep concern over the recent political turmoil in Bangladesh and its potential impact on key India-Bangladesh collaborative projects.
Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Minister Chowdhury highlighted several crucial bilateral initiatives currently on hold due to the situation. These include the Maitri Bridge at Sabroom, the Agartala-Akhaura rail link, and the proposed air service between Agartala and Chittagong.
“With an interim government set to take charge in Bangladesh, these desired projects have been temporarily halted,” Chowdhury stated. “However, I’m confident that our central government will take necessary steps to address these issues.”
The minister strongly condemned the recent events in Bangladesh, describing them as “a stain on civilized society.” He emphasized the Indian government’s firm stance against the unrest, reiterating the historical friendship between the two nations.
“A barbed wire fence can never separate India and Bangladesh,” Chowdhury asserted, alluding to the deep-rooted ties between the countries.
The minister also pointed to potential foreign interference, suggesting that certain powers may be attempting to disrupt Indo-Bangladesh relations. “Some foreign powers have conspired to damage India’s relationship with Bangladesh. But time will reveal much in the future,” he remarked.
Chowdhury stressed the importance of democratic principles, stating that no democratic government could support actions against a popularly elected government. He expressed concern about the negative message sent to the world regarding Bengal.
Despite the current uncertainties, the minister remained optimistic about the future of bilateral projects. He emphasized India’s consistent positive approach in foreign relations and expressed hope that the central government would take appropriate measures to revive the stalled initiatives.
