Tripura: Rising Water at Gomati River Threatens Homes at Melaghar

Residents of Melaghar Municipal Council in Sepahijala District of Tripura especially those residing at the Indira Nagar’s Ward No 7 and 8 are living in constant fear as the Gomati River continues to encroach upon their homes. The situation has reached a crisis point with many families like that of Ismail Miah on the brink of losing their only shelter.

It was learned that Miah’s house is now perilously close to the riverbank due to the incessant rain and rise in water levels. Desperate to save his home he has been forced to dismantle it and seek temporary shelter elsewhere. However, the uncertainty of the future looms large over him and his family.

“I spent the entire night awake guarding my house and with the water rising rapidly, I fear losing everything,” said Miah.

The residents have repeatedly appealed to the local administration for protection measures including the construction of a boulder wall. Despite protests and road blockades their demands have fallen on deaf ears.

“We are living in constant terror and the government seems indifferent to our plight.” said a local resident.

Intellectuals in the area have expressed concern over the situation and called for immediate government intervention. They believe that unless urgent steps are taken the crisis could escalate further leading to widespread displacement and suffering.
