Peaceful Polls in Tripura: 79.06% Voter Turnout Reported in Panchayat Elections


Tripura’s three-tier Panchayat elections which commenced on Thursday at 7 AM have witnessed a robust voter turnout of over 79.06% by 4 PM despite reports of isolated disturbances.
A Tripura State Election Commission official informed that out of 6,909 total seats across Gram Panchayats, Panchayat Samitis, and Zila Parishads, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party has already secured 4,805 seats uncontested.
The election encompasses 6,370 Gram Panchayat seats, 423 Panchayat Samiti seats, and 116 Zila Parishad seats. With 12,94,153 registered voters, including 6,58,445 males, 6,35,597 females, and 11 others, voting took place across 2,650 polling stations.
“By 4 PM, we recorded a 79.06% turnout. Voting is still ongoing in some areas where it started late due to certain issues. Elections were held for 2,102 seats,” the official stated, detailing the gradual increase in voter participation throughout the day.
The commission received around six complaints of distraught incidents which were promptly addressed by security personnel and Returning Officers.
Highlighting the security measures the official mentioned the deployment of over 10,000 state security forces, including the Tripura State Rifles (TSR) and 30 companies of the Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) to ensure peaceful polling.
