Tripura Panchayat Elections: Nomination Filing Concludes, 10,164 Candidates in Fray

The nomination filing process for the upcoming three-tier Panchayat elections in Tripura concluded on July 18, with a total of 10,164 candidates from various parties throwing their hats into the ring.

According to the Tripura State Election Commission (SEC), the nominations were scrutinized on July 19, and the last date for withdrawal of candidature is July 22. The elections will be held on August 8, followed by counting on August 12, and the entire process will be completed by August 17.

The SEC has received 8,997 nominations for Gram Panchayat, 783 for Panchayat Samiti, and 384 for Zila Parishad. The BJP has submitted the maximum number of nominations, followed by the CPIM and Congress.

There are 6,370 seats up for grabs in 606 Gram Panchayats, 35 Panchayat Samities, and 8 Zila Parishads. The total number of voters in the state is 12,94,153, with 6,58,445 males, 6,35,597 females, and 11 others. The elections will be held across 2,650 polling stations.

SEC Secretary Ashit Kumar Das said, “We have received a total of 10,164 nominations, and the scrutiny process was completed today. We are now gearing up for the elections.”

The elections will see a contest between the ruling BJP, the opposition CPIM and Congress, and other regional parties like the Tipra Motha. The results will be crucial for the parties ahead of the 2023 assembly elections in the state.
